Twilight star Jackson Rathbone will follow up his appearance as the vegetarian vampire Jasper Hale in this week's The Twilight Saga: New Moon with a starring role in Clive Barker's Dread, a gory, psychological horror film headed to theaters in January. Watch the international trailer after the jump, courtesy of our friends at Dread Central.
Rathbone stars as Stephen, a sensitive film student who, along with two of his classmates (Shaun Evans and Hanne Steen), conducts a campus experiment to root out the deepest, darkest fears that scare his fellow co-eds. But as they turn the camera on themselves, the amateur philosophers find their own issues coming to bear, including one having to do with visions of an axe-wielding murderer.
Dread marks a major turn for Rathbone's career, giving him his first major lead role since joining the popular Twilight franchise. And, for a change, Rathbone will have the chance to prove his acting chops as a human, and not just as a (purposefully) stiff vampire who can't quite control his taste for blood.
Anthony DiBlasi, who's been connected to a number of recent and future Clive Barker films, directs from his own adapted script based on a short story in Barker's Book of Blood anthology. Dread hits theaters January 29, 2010.
